Josef Stangl (1907-1979)

He was the Bishop of the beautiful German city of Würzburg from 1957 to 1979. I already posted some photos from the day of his installation quite some time ago. I now found some more pictures that kind of complete my collection. So today I am going to post all the black and white photos (teaser) and tomorrow you get the color blast (main event).

The first four photos show bishop Stangl (right) on the day of his consecration in procession with his main consecrator, archbishop Schneider from Bamberg

Here you can nicely see the loops at the end of the train that enable the caudatarius to get a firm grip

Oops! Somebody forgot his train!

Nice. Alas, the mitre (and pectoral) of Bp. Stangl already give us a foretaste of the ugliness which was to come.

I learned a new word in Latin today: caudatarius = train bearer

Thanks as always for the great post.
