Cardinal Spellman

Are these white buckles shoes? And if yes, why have I never heard of those before? Can any reader offer any information?

What's that?

Sorry, this photo is microscopic. I don't know the who, where, when, what and why, but I know that this train that is being carried is a bit too long for a cassock-train. I also can't see a cappa, so what is going on here? Any ides, dear readers?

Canon-Confusion

Reader Carl sent in these photos from this year's Precious Blood procession in Bruges

In this first photo you see the bishop with two of his canons in proper dress: Black cassock, rochet and black silk mozzetta with red buttons and piping.

This photo raises two questions: Why is the black bishop not wearing a purple cassock (or is he no bishop)? And why does the canon to the left wear a purple cassock? Help!

And is this just some canon who does not belong to the Bruges Cathedral chapter or did he get it all wrong (purple cassock; no-silk mozzetta)? Help again!

Weird cappa alert!

What's that? I know that there are versinos of the cappa magna that have two slits so that the arms can pass through the fabric, but I have never seen a cappa worn quite the way Wilhelmus Petrus Adrianus Maria Mutsaerts, bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands is wearing his in these photos.

Bishop Torres again

Reader Latinmass made a comment on the much disputed (bishop, yes or no?) portrait of Manuel Torres y Torres, bishop of Plasencia. He referred to a photo of said bishop in which he is standing next to a cardinal.

Here is the photo. The cardinal is Enrique Almaraz y Santos, archbishop of Seville from 1907 to 1920 and archbishop of Toledo from 1920 to 1922. As Latinmass pointed out, here you can see bishop Torres in proper bishop's robes.

Caspar Klein

Installed as bishop of the old and prestigious diocese of Paderborn/Germany in 1920, Caspar Klein became the first archbishop of this city, when Pius XI raised the see to an archdiocese in 1930. The diocese of Paderborn was founded in 799 by Leo III. During the middle ages worldly territory was acquired and the bishops became prince-bishops. After the dissolution of the Empire, the diocese was reinstated in 1821.

Caspar Klein is one of the few German bishops from the 20th century which I have seen in a cappa with ermine tails. And what is this thing covering his rochet? Or is it the rochet? It shows the coat of arms of an archbishop (I got twenty bucks that say it's Klein's). It is kind of weird, isn't it?

Out of town!

I'll be taking a short trip until Sunday, hence no posting until then.

To not leave you all alone and unoccupied I cordially invite you to tell me what Ignacy Krasicki, archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland from 1795 to 1801 is wearing here: Did he skin grandma's sofa because he liked the floral pattern better than the plain silk used for cassock and mozzetta? Or was there a time when something like that was comme il faut?

See you again on Monday,
Leo

Now...

... what kind of color for a cappa is that?

This is a bishop from France. I don't know who he is. If any body has any idea what is going on here, please let me know.

A little help please...

Charles, who already sent in the two great pictures of Cardinal Villeneuve, asked me if I knew this prelate. I don't. So I pass the question on to my faithful and learned readers...

Any idea?
