He was a very zealous missionary bishop in Argentina, once jumped of his horse that was running towards an abyss and broke two rips. He kept on cheering up his missionaries who were all worried about his life...sounds like a saint.

He was born in Castelnuovo d'Asti, and his mother had grown up with Giovanni Bosco (later St John Bosco), who as a native of that same city. Giovanni Cagliero's mother, after she was widowed, asked "Don" Bosco to bring him to Torino for an education in 1850. In 1859 he became one of the original members of the Salesian Society. He was ordained in 1861 and led the Salesian missionaries to America in 1875, arriving in Viedma in Argentina. Cagliero remained active as a youth worker even as a missionary, a bishop, a papal nuncio and a cardinal.
