Photos from Belgium

Canons from England

Thanks to Fr. Selvester, who pointed out to me that English canons have some intersting habits. Here are examples:

I found some more postcards...

Sorry for not posting for four days. I keep having internet and electricity problems, so whenever I actually can go online, I use the time doing study-related stuff. Well, I hope that this time I will at least be able to post a couple of postcards from France:

Meet Thomas-François Boutry, bishop of Le Puy-en-Velay/France from 1907 to 1925. In this photo you get a half-decent look at the special kind of watered silk, which I have only seen on pictures of French prelates so far. While the bishop does not look particularly happy here, the next photos - all taken on the day of his consecration - make up for that:

A splendid portrait...

... of John Murphy Cardinal Farley (1842-1918), Archbishop of New York from 1902 until his death.

The portrait was painted by Alfons Mucha in 1904, before Farley's elevation to the cardinalate (1911), as the purple color of the robes also suggests.

The military pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1960

In 1958, French soldiers invited their former German opponents to gather with them in Lourdes to pray together and to pray with their families for peace in the world.

Since then, the annual gathering in Lourdes has grown to involve military personnel from 31 different countries.

Here are some photos from the gathering in 1960:

Maurice Cardinal Feltin, Archbishop of Paris, looking a bit skeptical.

The three Cardinals in this pgoto are (feft to right): Franz Cardinals König (Vienna), Maurice CArdinal Feltin (Pairs) and Bernardus Cardinal Alfrink (Utrecht).

Same Cardinals, same order, but with Feltin in cappa magna, which is fitting because of the three he was the least liberal.

Blessed Ildefonso Cardinal Schuster OSB (1880-1954)

I finally have enough photos to give Blessed Cardinal Schuster his own posting!

Ordained a priest in 1904, he became abbot nullius of St. Paul outside the Walls in 1918. He became archbishop of Milan on June 26, 1929. On July 13, 1929 he took the oath of loyalty to the Italian state in front of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, the first Italian bishop to do so, as required by the Lateran Treaty.

Schuster was created cardinal-priest by Pope Pius XI on July 15, 1929, receiving the title of Ss. Silvestro e Martino ai Monti on July 18, 1929. He was consecrated on July 21, 1929 in the Sistine Chapel by Pius XI personally.
