A splendid portrait...

... of John Murphy Cardinal Farley (1842-1918), Archbishop of New York from 1902 until his death.



The portrait was painted by Alfons Mucha in 1904, before Farley's elevation to the cardinalate (1911), as the purple color of the robes also suggests.

He's also in a green chair and the galero on the coat of arms behind him is green. All clues to the fact that he was still an archbishop here but not yet cardinal.
