Tiara of Pope Paul VI

Yes...a peculiar and very dated affair, which somehow suited Pope Paul VI. A little searching on the internet revealed that it was more than twice as heavy as the more ornate tiaras of his immediate predecessors, so it really wasn't much of a success at all.

I bet Spellman tried it on.

I doubt it. He had more sense than that. He bought it to save, as much as was possible, the dignity of the Papacy.
This tiara was a disaster, just like everything else Paul VI did.

Pope Paul VI gave up the tiara for the poor, but the extreme trads: "wear the tiara, forget the poor" hahahaha

Anonymous (Dec 1),

"Wear the tiara, forget the poor"???? That is a totally unbiblical statement. When Saint Mary Magdalen poured expensive nard on the feet of Our Lord it was Judas who thought that the money used for it would have been better spent given to the poor. Our Lord responded "The poor you always have with you" (St. John 12, 4-8).

The Papal tiara, like every other costly ornament worn or used by any member of the clergy whether Priest, Bishop, or Pope, is used to give honor to their spiritual office and through them to give honor to Him whom they represent: Our Lord Himself. Nothing employed by the Church is used for the honor of the mere creatures who make up the hierarchy.

It is wrong for any member of the hierarchy to think he is important enough to take away from Our Lord's honor by depriving his Divinely constituted office of the reverence it deserves.

Well excuse me, where in the bible did Jesus mandate peter to wear the Tiara?

That is why i I am not impressed with these extreme traditionalist. They criticize pope Paul VI in giving up the tiara to be auctioned for the poor and insulted him for the reforms he introduced. How dare them! If Pope Paul VI wanted to give up the tiara then so be it, they are not in the position to criticize the pope for it. It is the pope who has the final say in particular in Church discipline

>>>The Papal tiara, like every other costly ornament worn or used by any member of the clergy whether Priest, Bishop, or Pope, is used to give honor to their spiritual office and through them to give honor to Him whom they represent: Our Lord Himself.

but the true reason why they represent Christ is the validity of their ordination- and in the case of the Pope his election and acceptance to take the throne of Peter. Ergo, a priest is still a priest even without the vestments and the Pope is still the pope with or with out the tiara. He can exercise his supreme, full, immediate authority even without the tiara. You are right in saying they represent the lord- that is why I will not tolerate what the previous anonymous said "This tiara was a disaster, just like everything else Paul VI did."How dare that person say that! Pope Paul VI gave up his tiara in humility and love for the poor which is based from the commandment of our lord- to love one another.

>>>It is wrong for any member of the hierarchy to think he is important enough to take away from Our Lord's honor by depriving his Divinely constituted office of the reverence it deserves.

Excuse me but let me remind you that there were popes who reigned without the papal tiara in the early history of the CHurch and Saint Peter was one of them. It was never taught by the Church that the tiara is essential for the pope to reign. What she taught is the Pope who posses this power of the keys- to loose and to bind/ to allow or to forbid. If the pope want to wear the tiara so be it but if he wants to give it up especially for the poor so be it.
