Mighty Mitres

The mitre on the right belonged to Leo X and it has more pearls than the ocean has drops.

Artist George Stuart produces very detailed and beautiful historical figures. Among these I found Louis Cardinal de Rohan (of "necklace affair"-fame). Mr. Stuart even made a little cappa for His Eminence!

Lying in state

Some readers keep asking for more photos of prelates lying in state. I have a really hard time finding these and I am sorry that I kept you waiting for so long. I hope the following three photos will make up for that:


Antolín Cardinal Monescillo y Viso, Bishop of Calahorra y la Calzada (1861-1865), Bishop Jaén (1865-1877), Archbishop of Valencia (1877-1892), Archbishop of Toledo and Primate of Spain (1892 - 1897). This photo was taken in the chapel of the archiepiscopal palace in Toledo in 1897. I don't even know if it qualifies as "lying in state", since there is no coffin. Does anybody know anything about this? Why is the late Cardinal lying on the ground?

This former Archbishop of Munich (1909 - 1917) already had his own posting. But now I found this photo in which you can see a cardinal's cassock as it used to look (and - of course - in my opinion needs to look again): Watered silk with a nice little train attached.

And here is another photo of Cardinal Goossens that I find somewhat strange:

If this was a procession, wouldn't there be more people around? And if it is just an afternoon stroll in fairly un-casual wear, shouldn't there be a bit more reverence than only two boys kneeling? Granny is dragging her two grandchildren along, the shopkeepers are watching from the door and through the window, the bum-kind-of guy in the back has his hat on (as does the kid behind the train) and keeps the hands in his pockets. If this was Europe in 2009, I'd understand. But this photo obviously is at least 103 years old. Weird.
