Blessed Ildefonso Cardinal Schuster OSB (1880-1954)

I finally have enough photos to give Blessed Cardinal Schuster his own posting!

Ordained a priest in 1904, he became abbot nullius of St. Paul outside the Walls in 1918. He became archbishop of Milan on June 26, 1929. On July 13, 1929 he took the oath of loyalty to the Italian state in front of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, the first Italian bishop to do so, as required by the Lateran Treaty.

Schuster was created cardinal-priest by Pope Pius XI on July 15, 1929, receiving the title of Ss. Silvestro e Martino ai Monti on July 18, 1929. He was consecrated on July 21, 1929 in the Sistine Chapel by Pius XI personally.

The superb St Lawrence Press Blog, has a short piece for Septuagesima, explaining how prelates would "dress down" for this penitential season and Cardinals would wear purple, bishops black (but not Habitus Pianus, because they had a train). Prelates apparently wore Rose-pink cassocks and ornamants on the two festive Sundays of Lent & Advent. Are there any pictures illustrating any of these old time glories ? Thank you. Alan Robinson

Beautiful photos but, as always, bitter sweet to see.

Why did Vatican II have to destroy so much :(

Or the misinterpretation of Vatican II.... Or the problems that were there under the surface and then came out... Or the "Hermeneutic of Rupture"... Or whatever...

Is there any progress with Blessed Cardinal Schuster's cause? It seems like it's lost some momentum and that's unfortunate.

Blessed Idelfonso Cardinal Schuster is such a wonderful Catholic example of what a Church leader should be. Head of the Ambrosian Rite of Milan, I would like to see more of him in his role of the second person in charge of the Ambrosian Rite, second only to the Pope. I also would like to see some of the prayers he composed.
