In relation to the picture of the Creation of the Irish Cardinal Michael Browne, OP, his niece, Maire Mac AnTaoi, who was the daughter of the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs married to Browne's sister, in her autobiography tells a story that Browne, who was Master of the Sacred Palace and, so she tells, sometimes confessor to Pius XII, had a rather spectacular falling out with Pius on Browne's election as General of the Dominicans. She tells that Pius had instructed Browne to go find out what the "story" was in relation to the election and that, instead, Browne was thought to be Pius's favorite and candidate and was duly elected. It is alleged that Pius never spoke to Brown again and that John XXIII was to make up for the misunderstanding by giving Browne the red hat, which the picture illustrates.
