Now that was quicker than I thought

A reader from the Philippines asked yesterday if I could post some photos of prelates from his home country from the pre-conciliar time. I answered that I didn't have anything but promised to look. Well, I found two nice motives (small ones, sorry):

Rufino Jiao Cardinal Santos, archbishop of Manila from 1953 to 1973, elevated to the cardinalate in 1960, first Filipino Cardinal.

Julio Cardinal Rosales y Ras, archbishop of Cebu from 1949 to 1982, elevated to the cardinalate in 1969 (so not exactly pre-conciliar, but nice shot anyways).

I wonder if the old true scarlet purple of the cardinals was as different from the new orange stuff as the vintage pictures seem to show.

It must have been. When on a color photo a cappa looks orange-ish, it must be due to some whacky lighting. All the cardinal's cappae I've seen in natura so far are more scarlet than orange.

hi leo thanks for posting pics of two of our most cherished cardinals. i wish cardinals sin, vidal and santos also had that kind of pics but that is something i doubt since they are elevated to the cardinalate after the council. also the pic of children in prelatial dress are really cute. i think one of those are taken in the philippines!

You're right. The one with the nun and the bishop is from Spain. The one with the mini-cardinals if from the Philippines
